The holiday season is near and I am feeling that familiar feeling that I am feeling during this time of the year. Since I am feeling that feeling again, I just completed my Annual Physical Exam last week, I believe that would be last Tuesday but I can not recall the exact date and time, to comply with the company’s policy. Because if I will not comply, there will be something gruesome that I do not want to imagine waiting for me (just kidding).

One of the examinations that I or we (meaning everyone who wants their bodies to be tested) need to undergo is the eye check up. I have my eyes refracted a month before the company’s Annual Physical Examination so I already knew that I already need a pair of glasses (I am just stubborn to get one). The doctor told me that it is a must that I wear glasses so I have checked online and saw that there are many online shops where you can get your glasses. Hmmm here’s something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I want to share it to all of my friends and not-yet-still-friends.

The History of the Middle Finger

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as “plucking the yew” (or “pluck yew”).

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since ‘pluck yew’ is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F’, and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as “giving the bird.”
